Description
Picture of the cedar dory I built for the Adarondak Lake country
Boat took over a year to build interrupted by weather (it was built outside) boat is constructed from cedar strips 1/4 thick by 3/4 wide with cove and bead on the edged. I made the strips from cedar planks I bought in a garage sale. The strips were glued together and held with clamps and tacks to a series of plywood frames (that were later removed) Maximum was 2-3 planks a day on each side and then had to wait for the glue to dry followed by removing clamps and tacks and then more strips. It took about 12 hours to sand and was then covered with 1 layer of cloth and West System epoxy on the outside, then the shell was removed from the building form and the inside sanded and also coated with cloth and epoxy. The epoxy was covered with 3 coats of marine spar varnish to provide ultra violet protection for the epoxy. Thinking of building something in the 14-17 foot range next year, looking for the right design

Hey Grey...... nice job....

I just finished my first strip-built kayak.......(sorry, no pics)

But I know first hand the time and patience it takes to build a stip-built......

Was that a kit or did you layout the forms yourself?

Very Nice! I have been thinking of making a small boat myself, but don't know if I can put in that kind of time.

I bought a set of plans and milled the wood myself with a shaper and table saw...made several large garbage can size bags of cedar sawdust!!! band sawed the frames from plywood and mounted them to 2X10 strongbacks form took a couple of days to prepare working part time
